Jones to quit Japan after World Cup
Eddie Jones could be on his way to Cape Town after World Rugby's premier event, with the Australian not keen on a new Japan contract.
Japan coach Eddie Jones has revealed he will step down after the Rugby World Cup amid reports he will take over at the Stormers.
Jones has been coach of Japan since 2012 and will lead the country of his mother's birth to the World Cup in England, the tournament starting on September 18.
But Jones told Kyodo News on Tuesday that he will not extend his contract with the Japan Rugby Football Union (JFRU) after World Rugby's premier event.
Japan have been grouped with South Africa, Samoa, Scotland and United States in Pool B.
"The Union are going to announce this afternoon that I will not be continuing after 2015," the 55-year-old said.
"That was always the case as my contract was until the end of the year, so all they are doing is stating the obvious.
"People assumed that as I had been named the director of [Japan's] new Super Rugby side I would stay on. But that was just an administrative role not a coaching role. All I was doing was help get it set up."
Jones had previously confirmed he is "chatting" with the Stormers about replacing Allister Coetzee as coach of Cape Town's Super Rugby side.
The Australian, who has previously coached the Wallabies and been an assistant with the Springboks, reckons staying with Japan to lead them on home soil at the 2019 World Cup would be overstaying his welcome.
"It's a great opportunity for the JRFU to find a new person with a new perspective and new ideas so he can build a team towards 2019," Jones said.
