Jones has landed 'plum gig' with England, says Greenwood
England Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood believes Eddie Jones has plenty to be excited by as the nation's new head coach.
Eddie Jones has "landed a pretty plum gig" with England, says Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood.
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) have turned to Jones to replace Stuart Lancaster, who departed after overseeing a poor World Cup on home soil in which England were eliminated from the group stages.
Australian Jones has earned a reputation as one of the best coaches in the game having led his country to the 2003 World Cup final, where they were beaten by an England side including Greenwood, while he was also part of the staff for South Africa's 2007 triumph.
Jones was critical of elements of England's World Cup campaign, including their handling of Sam Burgess, who has since returned to rugby league with South Sydney Rabbitohs.
However, Greenwood believes that may have been Jones' way of putting his name forward for the job and has welcomed the appointment of the former Japan coach.
"He says it how it is. He's been reported on during the World Cup, wondering what we were doing at number seven [in the rankings] and talking about the Burgess handling," he told Sky Sports.
"That's someone who knew the job was up for grabs. He wasn't going to change his style, his methods, to pander to get the job.
"I'm very, very optimistic that England have got a very good, experienced coach and now time will tell what he wants to do with his coaching staff.
"There's so much to be excited about. I'm absolutely confident that Eddie Jones will do a great job. Probably in about six months', 12 months' time, when some of his work is coming to fruit, he'll probably call Stuart Lancaster - he may have already rung him - and say thank you for this squad.
"We didn't get the results we wanted in the World Cup, but he's got a 23, 24-year-old average age, 25 to 30 caps a man, with four years to go until Japan [2019 World Cup]. I think he's landed a pretty plum gig."
Greenwood believes that Jones will want to see an alteration to the RFU's policy of not selecting players plying their trade overseas.
"Does he pick up the phone to the French players? I know the RFU have already said that policy won't change," he added. "How strong will be he be, how keen will he be to bring [Nick] Abendanon, [Steffon] Armitage, [David] Strettle into the fold?"
