Cheika confirms Giteau broken ankle
Australia coach Michael Cheika has confirmed Matt Giteau suffered a broken ankle in their Bledisloe Cup defeat to New Zealand on Saturday.
Matt Giteau's Australia career appears to be over after the centre suffered a broken ankle against New Zealand on Saturday.
Australia coach Michael Cheika confirmed Giteau is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining the injury 10 minutes into the humiliating 42-8 loss to the All Blacks.
Giteau is expected to play no further part in Australia's Rugby Championship campaign and Cheika said the the 33-year-old, who has 103 caps for the Wallabies, is focused on returning to rugby with his club side Toulon.
"Matt's got a bit of a break in his leg at the top of his leg and a bit of a fracture in his ankle," Cheika said. "Good job on his leg.
"He's disappointed but he's also very realistic. He's a pro.
"He knows that he's still got to get himself right and get back to his club commitments for later in the season so that's what he'll be doing."
Giteau is not the only Australia player to have sustained a serious injury against New Zealand, with fellow back Rob Horne also out for the rest of the Rugby Championship with a shoulder problem, while Matt Toomua is also likely to miss the Wellington Test with concussion.
"I would say [Toomua] will struggle to be available for this week after he took a pretty heavy head knock," Cheika said.
"We'll just go through the recovery protocols for the head knock and see how he stands."
