Torrential rain cuts short day one at Phillip Island
Torrential rain ensured the second practice session at Phillip Island was red flagged, with only six riders able to set times.
The second free practice session was washed out at the Australian Grand Prix as heavy rain wreaked havoc at Phillip Island.
Torrential showers set in on Friday, with MotoGP officials eventually calling an end to proceedings late in the afternoon amid the dangerous conditions.
LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow was the fastest rider during a soaking wet FP1, clocking a time of one minute, 40.957seconds.
That session also saw Valentino Rossi's best lap times cancelled, the Movistar Yamaha rider dropping down from second to 20th in the standings after exceeding the permitted use (10 laps) of his 1008B super soft full wet front tyre.
The weather continued to deteriorate from that point, with only six riders - headlined by Ducati stand-in Hector Barbera (1:51.958secs) - setting a time in FP2 before the session was cancelled.
Danilo Petrucci, Australian Jack Miller, newly-crowned world champion Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso are among the top five heading into Saturday, with the 10 top riders after FP3 directly progressing to the second qualifying session.
