Dixon claims Indycar victory in Phoenix
Defending Indycar champion Scott Dixon was victorious at the Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday.
Scott Dixon moved to equal-fourth on the all-time Indycar winners list after securing victory at the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix on Saturday.
Dixon, 35, led for the majority of the race after tyre problems affected Team Penske duo Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya at the 250-lap event.
Castroneves led the first 39 laps when he suffered a flat tyre, before team-mate Montoya was dealt an identical problem after setting the pace for the next 56 laps, giving Dixon the chance to clinch the win under yellow at the Phoenix International Raceway.
"The biggest thing was just maintaining. I was just keeping behind with whoever was behind or in front and just trying to figure out what we needed," said Dixon, who led the field during the remaining 155 laps.
"I can't give Team Target enough credit, they did an amazing job. The pit-stops were flawless, the strategy we stretched out the fuel where we needed to."
The win was defending champion Dixon's 39th of his IndyCar career, equal with Al Unser.
Of the record, Dixon said: "It's still mind-boggling for me. I just love doing what I do. I feel very privileged and lucky to be driving in Indycar and to be in a team like this."
Simon Pagenaud bettered his best ever finish in the sport by guiding his Team Penske car to second ahead of team-mate Will Power.
Tony Kanaan and Graham Rahal rounded out the top five, while Montoya and Castroneves were able to recover and finish in eighth and 11th respectively.
