Chicharito substituted in for Mexico thanks to popularity
The star forward came in to Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Canada in part because of requests from El Tri fans at the Estadio Azteca.
With one change left and already up 2-0, Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio elected to use his final substitution to bring in Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, in part because of the player's popularity.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward started the night on the bench, as Osorio used the second match of the window against Canada to rest some of his usual starters and try out a few other combinations. In the second half, fans at the Estadio Azteca began cheering for the superstar's inclusion, and that influenced the decision to bring Hernandez on to replace Raul Jimenez in the 66th minute.
"It was Isaac [Brizuela] and Javier with a chance, but we decided on Javier, taking in mind that the Mexican fans have the right to ask for thier most influential players," Osorio said in his news conference after the match.
There were no more goals, as El Tri saw out a 2-0 victory, their fifth since Osorio took over as manager and 17th consecutive match without a defeat.
