Halep hopes the grass is greener at Wimbledon
Simona Halep is hoping a long run at Wimbledon will help her shrug off a difficult clay-court season.
Having struggled to hit top form during a disappointing clay-court season, Simona Halep is targeting a strong showing at Wimbledon.
In 2014, the Romanian was a finalist at the Madrid Open and the French Open, but 12 months later she exited in the first round in Madrid before suffering a surprise second-round defeat to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni at Roland Garros.
Halep - who split with coach Victor Ionita earlier this week - showed glimpses of her talent on grass during a quarter-final run at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, and she is confident that her game is suited to challenge again at Wimbledon after reaching the semi-finals last year.
"I can say that wasn't a good clay season for me this year," Halep said. "I was disappointed after I lost in the French Open.
"I didn't play tennis for about five days, which was very good. I relaxed myself. I took the pressure off of my head. I just said that I have to enjoy [tennis] again, just to work hard every day.
"So I started to work harder more. Now I feel pretty confident that I can play good tennis again.
"I like to play fast, to play close to the baseline, just to take the ball very quickly. I play my style. I play with confidence. I improved a lot in my serve so that can help me now on grass."
Halep, seeded third at SW19, insists she will not get ahead of herself and is focusing purely on her first-round encounter against Jana Cepelova.
"[It's] still another tournament, another year. So I have to take it match by match, to be very focused for what I have to do on court," she added.
"It's too far to think that I can repeat that [semi-final] result. I just want to play my first round to see how good I can play in that day and try to win as much as I can."
