Tamim century fires Bangladesh into Super 10
Oman proved no match for Bangladesh as Tamim Iqbal's hundred fired them to an 54-run rout and the World T20 Super 10 stage.
Tamim Iqbal's electric century sent Bangladesh into the World Twenty20 Super 10 stage as they battered minnows Oman by 54 runs in a rain-affected winner-takes-all Group A match.
The opener became the first Bangladesh batsman to score a T20 hundred and his innings of 103 from only 63 balls included 10 fours and five sixes as the Tigers posted 180-2 in Dharamsala.
Shakib Al Hasan took 4-15 as Oman, who had surprisingly beaten Ireland in their opening contest before seeing their second match versus Netherlands washed out, could only muster 65-9 after eventually being set a revised target of 120 off 12 overs following delays due to the weather.
Bangladesh now go into Group 2 of the Super 10 where they start against Pakistan on Wednesday, with Australia, India and New Zealand also in the pool.
It was a measured start from Tamim as Bangladesh initially struggled to get going, but he accelerated in the seventh over with 13 runs off Ajay Lalcheta.
Tamim was scoring runs through all parts of the pitch, with Sabbir Rahman (44 off 26) proving an able deputy in a 97-run second-wicket stand.
The 50 arrived with a paddle past short fine leg and he continued to find the boundary with regularity, going after Lalcheta again with a six that cleared long-on.
Arguably Iqbal's finest shot came with a huge 94-metre effort off Khawar Ali that was battered to midwicket.
The century deservedly arrived in the penultimate over, a full toss from Bilal Khan thumped to the boundary as Tamim became the 11th man to reach three figures in Test, one-day and T20 cricket.
All-rounder Shakib shone with the ball as Oman lost seven wickets for 20 runs to finish their first appearance at the tournament in disappointing fashion.
