Sabalenka passes Ostapenko test to set up Wimbledon last-16 clash with Osaka
Aryna Sabalenka's bid for a first Wimbledon title continues, with Naomi Osaka up next after a straight-sets win in the third round.
Aryna Sabalenka overcame a tricky test from Jelena Ostapenko, holding off a late fightback to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon with a straight-sets win.
She is through to the second week at the grass-court slam for the fourth time after her 6-4 6-4 victory in 92 minutes on Centre Court.
Both players took a typical big-hitting approach, combining for 46 winners (19 from Sabalenka, 27 from Ostapenko).
Sabalenka had to fend off a break point in her first service game but held on before a three-game winning streak swung the first set in her favour.
Ostapenko defended the first set point, holding her serve, but a love-hold put Sabalenka in the lead.
The pair then traded breaks at the start of the second set, with Sabalenka taking a 2-1 lead – Ostapenko held off five break points across her first two service games.
The world number one let her advantage slip slightly after going 4-1 up, with Ostapenko clawing back within reach, but she could only delay the inevitable once more.
Sabalenka's first match point went begging, but she converted the second, setting up a meeting with Naomi Osaka in the round of 16.
Sabalenka matches King ahead of facing a familiar foe
Sabalenka has now claimed 36 grand slam wins as top seed, equalling Billie Jean King (36) for the ninth-most in the Open Era.
She has also reached the round of 16 in each of the last eight grand slam women's singles events. The only other player who could achieve this is Iga Swiatek.
While this is her fourth time reaching the second week at Wimbledon, she has done so at each of her last 15 majors, dating back to Wimbledon 2021.
She will now face fellow four-time major champion Osaka on Sunday for the fifth time, the fourth time this year, and for the first time on grass. It will also be their fifth meeting in the fourth round of a tournament.
Karolina Muchova will also be playing in the fourth round after a 6-2 7-6 (7-1) win over Mananchaya Sawangkaew. 2026 is now her most successful grass-court season, with seven tour-level wins.
