French Open: Mboko moves on in Paris after comeback against Siniakova
Victoria Mboko will face Madison Keys for a place in the last 16 at the French Open after she beat Katerina Siniakova on Thursday.
Victoria Mboko was forced to show her powers of recovery against Katerina Siniakova as she came from a set down to reach the third round of the French Open.
After losing a topsy-turvy opening set, the ninth seed roared back to earn a 5-7 6-4 6-2 victory on Court Simonne Mathieu to set up a clash with American Madison Keys.
Mboko started strongly as she got the better of her opponents serve in the second game, only for three consecutive breaks to follow as both players failed to get a foothold.
Siniakova then broke again to take a 4-3 lead only to see Mboko return the favour, but the Canadian was unable to maintain her momentum as the first set slipped away.
The second set followed a similar pattern after back-to-back breaks early on, and when both players were able to hold on serve, it was Mboko who ultimately had the edge.
She forced a decider at the second time of asking, and opened the third set strongly before managing to register a decisive break to move ever closer to the next round.
And though Siniakova defended brilliantly, she was unable to halt Mboko, who reeled off the final four games and sealed the win with her fourth match point opportunity.
Data Debrief: Mboko marches on
Though not at her very best, Mboko was able to get herself over the line and reach the third round at Roland-Garros in back-to-back years, matching her best result in the French capital in the process.
In doing so, she became the youngest Canadian to reach a consecutive women's singles round of 32 at the French Open since Helen Kelesi, who did so between 1998 and 1999.
She has also won five of her last six clay-court matches, only losing to Emma Navarro in the Strasbourg final.
