French Open: Gauff rolls on in Roland-Garros title defence
Coco Gauff beat Mayar Sherif at the French Open on Thursday, and she will be joined in the third round by Amanda Anisimova and Madison Keys.
Coco Gauff passed a stern test against qualifier Mayar Sherif on her way to the third round of the French Open, as her title defence continues to gather pace.
Gauff needed one hour and 50 minutes to seal her 6-3 6-2 victory on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, in a match that saw 11 breaks of serve in total.
After saving a break point in the opening game of the encounter, Gauff found her rhythm and got the better of Sherif's serve early on to surge into a 3-0 lead.
Sherif threatened a comeback when she twice broke against the fourth seed, but each time, Gauff returned the favour and a love service game saw her take the first set.
But both players struggled on serve thereafter, with five consecutive breaks of serve opening up the second set before the American seized control and eventually held.
From the sixth game, Gauff remained in control and sealed her date with either Katie Boulter or Anastasia Potapova in the next round with a blistering backhand winner.
It was a good day all round for Gauff's compatriots at Roland-Garros, with Amanda Anisimova and Madison Keys also booking their places in the third round of the competition.
Anisimova's progression came after her opponent, Julia Grabher, was forced to withdraw due to illness at the start of the second set, with the sixth seed winning the first 6-0.
Keys, meanwhile, matched Gauff by downing Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in straight sets, with the 2018 semi-finalist easing to a 6-4 6-4 victory in one hour and 36 minutes.
Data Debrief: Cheers to 22
Twenty-two-year-old Gauff has now claimed the most women's singles main-draw wins at Roland-Garros (29) among players from the United States before turning 23, surpassing Mary Joe Fernandez (28).
Gauff also became the first player to claim 80 women's singles grand slam matches before turning 23 since Maria Sharapova achieved the feat at the Australian Open in 2008.
