Madrid Open Halted Due to Power Outage in Spain
The Madrid Open faced a major disruption on Monday after a massive power outage across Spain and Portugal, halting matches and activities at the Caja Mágica.
Tennis action and all activities at the Caja Mágica came to a standstill on Monday following the widespread power outage that impacted large parts of Spain and Portugal. The lack of electricity led to the immediate suspension of ongoing matches and complications with access to the Madrid venue.
Matches Suspended and Chaos at the Caja Mágica
The blackout started around midday, causing widespread disruption inside the facility. In addition to the suspended matches, public access was blocked as the entry and exit turnstiles were rendered inoperable.
Some interior areas of the Caja Mágica were plunged into darkness, stores inside the venue shut down, and spectators were gradually evacuated from the stands. At that time, approximately 20,000 attendees were expected, with matches underway on five different courts. Two women’s singles matches and one women’s doubles match were completed, but several men’s singles matches had to be stopped just before their conclusion.
Tournament Adjusts Schedule Amid Crisis
No final decision has been made regarding the fate of Monday’s matches. The tournament organizers are following protocols similar to rain delays, canceling matches and rescheduling them according to court availability. Although the event is already in its second week, there is still some flexibility to adjust the remaining schedule.
As an interim solution, the external courts—where natural light is available—were opened for training sessions, allowing spectators to enjoy some activity while waiting for normal conditions to resume.
Regarding competitive action, the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Jacob Fearnley on the main court, as well as the one between Damir Dzumhur and Matteo Arnaldi on the Arantxa Sánchez Vicario Court, had to be interrupted.
However, the women’s matches between Mirra Andreeva and Yulia Starodubtseva, and between Belinda Bencic and Coco Gauff, were completed successfully, with victories for Andreeva and Gauff. In doubles, Sorana Cirstea and Anna Kalinskaya secured a win over Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi, while the men's doubles match featuring Christian Harrison and Evan King against Matthew Ebden and John Peers was suspended due to the lack of lighting.
