Leonardo Campana, the Inter Miami Forward, Gets Call-Up for Ecuador National Team
After being left out of the FIFA dates in September and October, the former Wolverhampton forward, who now shares the field with Argentine star Lionel Messi, is eager for a comeback with his national team.
QUITO, Ecuador.- Inter Miami forward Leonardo Campana is set to join the Ecuadorian national team after being called up by coach Félix Sánchez Bas. Initially overlooked by the coach, Campana's inclusion came as a contingency following the injury of Enner Valencia of Inter de Porto Alegre during a match against Palmeiras in the Brazilian league.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation announced, "By the decision of the technical staff led by Félix Sánchez Bas, player Leonardo Campana will join the squad for the FIFA dates in November."
Campana has been a key player for Inter Miami, scoring nine goals in the regular MLS season and contributing two more in the U.S. Open Cup, both in the semifinal match against FC Cincinnati. Since joining Inter Miami, Campana has netted 23 goals, positioning him just six goals away from becoming the club's all-time top scorer, a record currently held by Argentine Gonzalo Higuaín with 29 goals.
After being left out of the FIFA dates in September and October, the former Wolverhampton forward, who now shares the field with Argentine star Lionel Messi, is eager for a comeback with his national team. His last appearance for Ecuador was on June 18, 2023, in a friendly match against Bolivia, where Ecuador won by a narrow margin.
Despite his impressive performance in the Under-20 South American Championship, leading up to the 2019 Poland World Cup with six goals, Campana is yet to score his first goal for Ecuador's senior team. This call-up presents another opportunity for him to make his mark on the international stage.
