Julián Álvarez Set for Starting Role as Argentina Seeks More Firepower
Julián Álvarez is expected to return to Argentina's starting lineup against Egypt, with Lionel Scaloni looking for more attacking support alongside Lionel Messi as the defending champions chase a place in the World Cup semifinals.
Argentina could make a key change in attack for its FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal clash against Egypt, with Julián Álvarez expected to replace Lautaro Martínez in the starting lineup.
Although head coach Lionel Scaloni has yet to officially confirm the change, multiple reports suggest the Atlético de Madrid striker is set to partner Lionel Messi in an effort to provide more attacking production.
So far, Messi has carried Argentina's offense, scoring seven of the team's 11 goals in the tournament. The remaining goals have mostly come from set pieces or penalties, highlighting the need for greater contributions from the players around the captain.
The situation mirrors the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Álvarez also began the tournament on the bench before earning a starting role and becoming one of Argentina's standout performers on its way to lifting the trophy.
This time, however, the forward arrived at the World Cup under different circumstances. An ankle injury suffered during the UEFA Champions League affected his preparation, leaving him short of match fitness entering the tournament.
Álvarez has featured off the bench against Algeria, Austria and Cape Verde, while starting only against Jordan when Scaloni rotated the squad. Despite the opportunities, he has yet to make the decisive impact many expected.
Against Egypt, Argentina hopes the talented striker can rediscover his best form and provide the offensive spark needed alongside Messi as the defending champions continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.
