Malawi looking to extend an unforgettable debut

Malawi's story at this WAFCON continues to break new ground. The Scorchers are competing in the tournament for the first time and reached the semifinals after defeating Ghana 2-1 in the quarterfinals, becoming the first debutants since Zimbabwe in 2000 to reach this stage.

Malawi could also achieve something even more extraordinary: becoming the first debutant nation since the inaugural 1998 edition to reach the WAFCON final.

The team coached by Lovemore Fazili has stood out especially for its attacking strength. Malawi enters the semifinal with nine goals, the most among the four teams still alive in the tournament.

One of their key players has been Temwa Chawinga, who has four goals and two assists. Her six direct goal contributions make her one of the most decisive players in this edition.

Algeria also enjoying its most important tournament

On the other side is an Algeria team enjoying its best-ever campaign in the competition. Les Fennecs reached the semifinals after coming from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1, earning their first-ever victory in a WAFCON knockout match.

Farid Benstiti's team has built its run on collective solidity. Algeria has scored six goals and conceded just two, while five different players have found the net during the tournament.

Midfielder Wissem Bouzid made it clear ahead of the match that their historic World Cup qualification has not reduced the team's ambition. Algeria want to stay true to their identity, relying on the hard work, unity and growth that have carried them this far.

A completely unprecedented matchup

Malawi and Algeria have never faced each other before at the WAFCON, meaning the semifinal in Rabat will open a new chapter for both nations.

The contrast also adds to the appeal of the matchup: Malawi boast the best scoring record among the semifinalists, but have yet to keep a clean sheet, while Algeria have built their run on one of the strongest defenses in the tournament.

In addition, the winner will become the seventh different nation to reach a WAFCON final since the current format began in 1998.

With both teams already qualified for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, the pressure now takes on a different dimension: only one will be one match away from becoming African champions for the first time.
