Two giants of African football meet once again in a knockout match. Cameroon and Nigeria face off this Sunday, August 9, in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026, with much more than a place among the continent's final four at stake.

The winner will advance to the semifinals and, in addition, automatically secure a place at the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027.

Cameroon arrives after finishing top of Group D and going unbeaten through the opening stage, while Nigeria, the reigning African champion, will look to maintain an extraordinary tradition: the Super Falcons have never failed to reach at least the semifinals since the centralized format of the competition began.

The Most-Played Matchup in WAFCON History

When Cameroon faces Nigeria, it means another chapter in one of the great rivalries in African women's football.

This will be the 14th meeting between the two nations in WAFCON history, more than any other fixture in the competition. They have met at virtually every possible stage: group stage, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoff, and final.

History clearly favors the Super Falcons.

Nigeria has won nine of the previous 13 meetings in open play and another two through penalty shootouts. Cameroon has defeated the Nigerians only once in the competition, a 1-0 victory in the 2012 third-place playoff.

The two nations also know what it means to meet in the quarterfinals. In 2022, Rasheedat Ajibade scored the only goal of the match to give Nigeria a 1-0 victory and eliminate Cameroon.

Overall, the Super Falcons have scored 33 goals in their 13 WAFCON matches against Cameroon, while conceding only six.

Cameroon Wants to Rewrite History

The head-to-head record favors Nigeria, but Cameroon's current form suggests this could be a much tighter contest.

The Indomitable Lionesses finished the group stage undefeated and have suffered only one defeat in their last 12 WAFCON matches in open play. Interestingly, that loss came against Nigeria in the 2022 quarterfinals.

Cameroon has scored in all three matches at this edition, with Marie Ngah Manga emerging as its main attacking threat after scoring three of the team's four goals. Grace Mendoua, meanwhile, joined the scoring list during the draw against Cabo Verde.

A victory would come with a massive reward. Cameroon would reach the WAFCON semifinals for the 11th time and secure its third appearance at a FIFA Women's World Cup, following previous qualifications in 2015 and 2019.

Nigeria Defends Its Crown and Its History

On the other side stands a Nigeria team that knows exactly how to handle this type of match.

The Super Falcons are the only nation to have reached the knockout stage at all 14 centralized editions of the WAFCON, and they are now targeting their 14th semifinal appearance.

Their quarterfinal record is equally impressive: Nigeria has won both of its previous matches at this stage without conceding a single goal. The Super Falcons defeated Cameroon 1-0 in 2022 before thrashing Zambia 5-0 at the previous edition.

Defensively, however, this tournament has been different. Nigeria has already conceded five goals, its highest total at a single WAFCON edition, although the team remains one of the competition's most dangerous attacking sides with nine goals.

Asisat Oshoala remains one of the team's biggest stars. The legendary striker now has 16 WAFCON goals, including two at the current tournament, while Rasheedat Ajibade has scored twice at this edition and five times overall in the competition.

The Nigerians also enter the quarterfinal after an explosive 6-2 victory over Egypt, a match in which Oshoala, Christy Ucheibe, and Ajibade all converted from the penalty spot.

A World Cup Ticket Is on the Line

This is about much more than reaching the semifinals.

The winner in Casablanca will automatically qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027.

For Nigeria, victory would mean a 10th World Cup appearance and the continuation of an extraordinary streak: the Super Falcons have competed at every edition of the tournament since the inaugural competition in 1991.

For Cameroon, it would mean a return to the global stage after previous appearances in 2015 and 2019.

History, rivalry, a semifinal place, and a World Cup ticket. Everything will be on the line when two of Africa's biggest football nations meet again in Casablanca.
