Ten-Player Nigeria Edges Zambia To Revive Wafcon Campaign
Asisat Oshoala's early strike proved enough as the Super Falcons held off Zambia despite playing most of the match with 10 players.
Nigeria earned a crucial 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday in Group C of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), bouncing back from its opening-match defeat to keep its knockout hopes alive.
The defending champions made the perfect start as veteran striker Asisat Oshoala scored in the eighth minute, giving the Super Falcons an early lead that ultimately proved decisive.
Nigeria's task became much more difficult before halftime when defender Oluwatosin Demehin received a straight red card, forcing the Super Falcons to play most of the match with only 10 players.
Despite being a player down, Nigeria produced a disciplined defensive performance and successfully frustrated Zambia, which pushed for an equalizer throughout the second half but was unable to break through.
The victory marks an important response for the reigning African champions after their surprising opening defeat to Malawi. Nigeria is now firmly back in the race for a place in the WAFCON quarterfinals, while Zambia suffered its first setback of the tournament after beginning its campaign with a dominant win over Egypt.
