Did James Rodriguez shrink from Messi? His statements are being reminded.
As in previous encounters, the match between Argentina and Colombia, corresponding to Matchday 16 of the South American Qualifiers, was highly intense. In that heated context, a tense exchange occurred between Lionel Messi, captain of Lionel Scaloni team, and James Rodríguez, leader of the “Cafetero” side.

From the pre-match handshake, there were signs of a cold and hostile attitude from Messi toward the former Real Madrid midfielder. That tension only grew during the game, culminating in a sharp remark from the Argentine star.
At the final whistle, players from both sides traded insults and provocations. While James was arguing with Cristian “Cuti” Romero, Messi stepped in, pulled him away from the group, and confronted him directly.
— “You said we were helped in the final. You talk too much,” Messi said, covering his mouth as he spoke.
— “I didn’t say anything,” James replied, visibly puzzled and trying to make sense of the Argentine anger.
Why Was Messi Angry with James Rodríguez?
Messi frustration wasn’t sparked by anything that happened during the match itself it had been brewing for weeks.
In a recent interview, James Rodríguez recalled the Copa América final, where Argentina defeated Colombia 1–0, and hinted that the Albiceleste had received outside help to win the title.
— “We had a great Copa América, but external factors kept us from winning. The referee (Brazil Rodolpho Toski) had a big influence; he didn’t award us one or two penalties. One of them was clear to me,” the Colombian said.
James didn’t stop at criticizing the refereeing he also took issue with the tournament logistics, suggesting that Argentina had an easier path.
— “We played in cities with long travel distances, while Argentina stayed in a less demanding zone,” he pointed out.
Rodríguez concluded his take on that final with a subtle dig:
— “We arrived in great form for that match and played a solid final. They scored with three minutes left before penalties. They won it all I’m not saying they didn’t deserve it but it’s true that certain things affected us and held us back. That’s just how it was.”
