Who Will Replace Lamine Yamal in the Spain National Team?
Luis de la Fuente reshuffles his deck after Lamine Yamal’s withdrawal. The Spain manager has called up Jorge de Frutos as a replacement, amid renewed tension between Barcelona and the RFEF.
A Forced Change for “La Roja”
The Spanish National Team faces a new setback on the road to the 2026 World Cup. The RFEF confirmed that Lamine Yamal was released from the squad due to pubalgia discomfort, a decision that comes amid growing friction with FC Barcelona, unhappy with how the player’s medical condition has been handled.
In response, coach Luis de la Fuente wasted no time and called up Jorge de Frutos, the Rayo Vallecano winger, to fill the vacancy for Spain’s final two qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey, where “La Roja” aims to secure its World Cup ticket.
De Frutos, Chosen on Merit
At 28, De Frutos is enjoying one of the best spells of his career. Known for his pace, defensive work rate, and ability to break lines down the wing, he has become a vital part of Rayo’s attack.
His performances have impressed Spain’s coaching staff, who see him as a natural replacement for Yamal to maintain the team’s width and attacking rhythm. Spain trusts his energy to keep balance and momentum in these decisive matches.

A New Opportunity with “La Roja”
This won’t be De Frutos’ first experience with the senior team. He had already been called up for the last two international breaks and made his debut on September 7 in a friendly against Turkey. However, he remained on the bench during the October fixtures.
Now, with Yamal sidelined and the World Cup on the horizon, the Rayo winger has the chance to establish himself within the squad. De la Fuente is counting on his drive and determination to close out qualifying strong and calm the waters after the latest controversy.
