Was He Afraid? Kylian Mbappé Blocked a Possible Rematch Against Argentina
A 2022 World Cup rematch on Argentine soil seemed like a tempting plan, but Kylian Mbappé put a stop to it. The French captain convinced the Federation not to travel to Buenos Aires, prioritizing his teammates’ rest ahead of a season that threatens to push every physical limit.
The Match That Never Happened
According to L'Équipe, the French Football Federation (FFF) seriously considered organizing a friendly in Argentina in March 2024, a year and a half after the historic World Cup final lost on penalties. The idea sounded like perfect marketing, but there was one major obstacle: the players themselves.
That’s when Mbappé, as captain and locker room leader, stepped in. The Real Madrid striker argued that a trip of more than ten hours by plane was an excessive burden in the middle of an already packed schedule. The proposal was quickly dismissed: Philippe Diallo, president of the FFF, ultimately sided with him.
An Overloaded Schedule
The French star made his point clear again in a press conference. “I don’t know if we’re ready to play a 60-game season. I can’t recall seeing a player perform at a high level for that many matches,” he said.
Although Mbappé didn’t complain about the number of fixtures, he did call for more recovery time. “I understand that people want us to play. And I get those who say we earn a lot of money, but we simply need a bit more rest,” he added.

His words reflect a broader concern among elite footballers, who see physical demands rise each season with new tournaments, tours, and commercial commitments.
A Leader With Influence
Beyond the fitness debate, the episode confirmed Mbappé’s influence within the French squad. The fact that the FFF president gave in to his request shows just how much weight the captain carries, both on and off the pitch.
For the fans, there will be frustration at not seeing a rematch against Argentina so soon. But for France, the message was clear: the players’ rest and performance come before any media spectacle.
