The FIFA Virus Strikes Again: Injuries That Trouble Europe’s Biggest Clubs
National teams celebrate, but clubs tremble: the FIFA break left a wave of injuries that set off alarms across Europe.
The FIFA Break, Clubs’ Worst Nightmare
Every international break tells the same story: elite managers crossing their fingers for their stars to return healthy. The overload of games, long trips and lack of rest turn the FIFA dates into a true headache for clubs, who end up paying the price of an increasingly packed calendar.
This time, the so-called “FIFA virus” struck hard, sidelining several key players right before the return of domestic leagues and the start of European competitions.
The Injuries That Raise Concern
Chelsea took a big hit with Dario Essugo, who underwent surgery for a right thigh injury and won’t return until January 2026.
Another alarming case is Desiré Doué, ruled out until October with a right calf injury, a major setback for PSG.
In the Premier League, the Cityzens will miss Omar Marmoush in the Manchester Derby due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, in Spain, Atlético de Madrid are waiting on Thiago Almada, who came back with muscle overload after the South American qualifiers.
Barcelona are also worried: Frenkie de Jong is dealing with discomfort in the external obturator muscle of his right leg and is doubtful against Valencia.
It’s even worse for Athletic Club, who won’t have Nico Williams until October after an adductor injury with Spain. And in Paris, beyond Doué, the major scare is Ousmane Dembélé, out until November with a thigh problem.
A Calendar at the Limit
These injuries arrive right before the Champions League and Europa League, tournaments where teams need full squads to survive the grind. The reality is clear: while FIFA defends its match calendar, clubs continue to suffer the consequences of an endless schedule that threatens to cause even more casualties in the coming months.
