With the group phase officially wrapped up, attention now turns to the UEFA playoff, the treacherous route that will distribute the continent’s last four World Cup berths. A total of 16 teams will enter this shootout. Twelve arrive after finishing second in their qualifying groups, while four more earned their invitation through the UEFA Nations League.
The Contenders: Fallen Giants and Dangerous Outsiders
The runner-up contingent includes some of Europe’s biggest names: Italy, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, and Czechia. Alongside them are steady performers like Albania, Slovakia, and Kosovo, as well as determined squads such as Ireland, Wales, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From the Nations League entries come Romania, Sweden, Northern Ireland, and North Macedonia—teams with enough identity and structure to spoil any favorite’s path.

The playoff design is brutally simple. UEFA will split the 16 teams into four separate playoff paths, each containing four nations. Every path will feature:

The team that wins its final secures a ticket to the World Cup.

The Draw, the Calendar and What Comes Next
The draw will be held on Thursday, November 20, at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, where the full bracket layout will be unveiled. Playoff matches will be contested between Wednesday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 31 across stadiums throughout Europe.
