Germany and the Netherlands Secure Their Place at the World Cup
Germany and the Netherlands delivered dominant performances to secure their spots at the 2026 World Cup, reinforcing their status as serious contenders.
The road to the 2026 World Cup has two new confirmed passengers: Germany and the Netherlands. Both European powers sealed qualification for the tournament set to take place in Mexico, the United States and Canada, doing so with emphatic victories that showcased their strong form during the final stretch of the qualifiers.
The Netherlands Stay Unbeaten and Close Out a Powerful Campaign
La Oranje wrapped up their qualifying phase with a commanding 4–0 win over Lithuania, a result that capped off an undefeated run in Group G. Under the guidance of Ronald Koeman, the Dutch side took control from the opening whistle, dominating possession and leaving the visitors with very few opportunities.
The breakthrough came from Tijjani Reijnders, who finished calmly after a recovery and assist by Frenkie de Jong. Later, Cody Gakpo doubled the lead from the penalty spot, and just moments afterward, Xavi Simons added the third with a precise strike inside the box. Donyell Malen sealed the rout with a sharp counterattack that highlighted the Dutch superiority from start to finish.
With this result, the Netherlands closed the campaign with 20 out of 24 possible points, 27 goals scored and only four conceded—numbers that position them as one of Europe’s most solid teams heading into the World Cup.
Germany Earn Their Revenge With a Statement Win
While the Dutch impressed, Germany delivered a true show of force. The Mannschaft crushed Slovakia 6–0 in Leipzig, a victory that also served as payback for their earlier defeat in Bratislava at the start of the qualifiers. The team led by Julian Nagelsmann produced its most convincing performance of the campaign, combining intensity, accuracy and relentless attacking play.
The scoring opened with Nick Woltemade, who continued his scoring streak after finding the net in Germany’s previous two matches. Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané (twice), Ridle Baku and young debutant Assan Ouedraogo completed the German exhibition. With qualification secured, Germany now look ahead to what will be their 21st World Cup appearance.
Europe Adds Two More Contenders
With Germany and the Netherlands already booked for 2026, Europe now has seven qualified teams. Beyond achieving the primary objective, both squads sent a clear message: they will arrive at the next World Cup with enough footballing strength to challenge for the title.
