England Without Jude Bellingham: Thomas Tuchel Explains Why He Left Out the Real Madrid Star
The biggest surprise in England is not who’s in, but who’s missing. Bellingham’s absence raised questions and Tuchel had to explain himself.
The Biggest Omission
England’s latest squad announcement came with a shock: Jude Bellingham was not called up by Thomas Tuchel for the matches against Wales and Latvia. The Real Madrid midfielder, recently back from shoulder surgery, has only played 100 minutes this season and is yet to complete a full match. That lack of rhythm was decisive for the German coach to leave him out.
But Bellingham wasn’t the only casualty. Phil Foden and Jack Grealish also missed out, despite strong starts to the season with Manchester City and Everton. Tuchel’s decision made it clear that beyond big names, continuity and the collective project matter most.
Tuchel Speaks Out
The controversy over the Real Madrid midfielder’s omission forced Tuchel to address the press. The German dismissed any personal issues with the player and made it clear it was a strategic move: “He’s a special player, and for special players there can be special rules. But this time we wanted to stick with the same group that worked so well in September.”
Tuchel stressed that the last international break “was the best so far” and that the plan is to build on that group. “Jude always deserves to be here, but he still hasn’t fully regained his rhythm at Real Madrid,” the coach explained, adding that he had spoken to the player before making the decision.
Other Absences and New Faces
Along with Bellingham, Foden and Grealish, another big name missing is Trent Alexander-Arnold, ruled out through injury. In his place, Tuchel continues to back youngsters like Elliot Anderson, who impressed in September with Nottingham Forest, while reinforcing his trust in established figures like Marcus Rashford, who has been in fine form with FC Barcelona.
England’s squad only had three changes from September: injuries to Noni Madueke and Tino Livramento opened the door for Bukayo Saka and Jarell Quansah, while Loftus-Cheek remains one of Tuchel’s personal choices.
What Does It Mean for Bellingham?
Although Tuchel clarified that “there’s no problem” with the player, being left out of two straight squads sparks debate. For Real Madrid, it could actually be good news, as Xabi Alonso can manage his recovery without added pressure. But for the midfielder, it serves as a warning that the national team won’t wait forever.
If he regains his best form at the Bernabéu, Bellingham will once again be untouchable. For now, though, England continue their march toward the 2026 World Cup without one of their brightest talents.
