Cristiano Ronaldo rules out retirement: “I still have a lot to give to Portugal and football”
At 40 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy both time and football. Far from retirement, the Portuguese superstar insists he still has much more to give.
The legacy lives on
Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t know the meaning of rest. At 40 years old, the all-time top scorer in football history — with 946 goals across clubs and country — has once again made it clear that his story is far from over.
After receiving a special recognition for his 22 years with the Portuguese national team, the captain spoke with the calm of a man who’s seen and won it all… yet still burns with ambition.
“I want to keep playing for a few more years — not many, I have to be honest. I’m still producing good things, helping my club and Portugal. So… why stop now?” said Ronaldo, confirming that retirement is not on his mind.
The 2026 World Cup dream
The Al-Nassr forward revealed that his biggest motivation now is helping Portugal qualify for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament that could make him the first player in history to compete in six editions.
“When I retire, I’ll do so satisfied, knowing I gave everything,” declared El Comandante, who continues to follow an intense physical and mental routine to perform at the highest level.
Under Roberto Martínez, Portugal leads UEFA Group F with a perfect record — six points, eight goals scored, and only two conceded. Sharing the group with Armenia, Hungary, and Ireland, the team looks set for a straightforward qualification.
Living in the moment, enjoying the game
Though he admits retirement is getting closer, Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t in a rush.
“It’s about enjoying the moment… because I know I don’t have many years left to play, but I want to make the most of them,” he said.
With his philosophy of living day by day and avoiding long-term plans, the Portuguese captain proves that his greatest strength isn’t just in his goals — it’s in his mindset. Time keeps ticking, but Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make history.
