Barcelona Turns Its Back on the Club World Cup: “Barça Isn’t Playing, So Why Watch It?”
Aitana Bonmatí, star of FC Barcelona Femenino and the Spanish National Team, dismissed the Club World Cup, claiming it holds no interest for her because her team isn't involved in the tournament.
Aitana Bonmatí Shows No Interest in the Club World Cup
Aitana Bonmatí, current Ballon d'Or winner and leader of both FC Barcelona and the Spanish Women's National Team, has made it clear that the Club World Cup in the United States is not on her radar. Speaking during Spain’s media day at Las Rozas, she said bluntly: “I know the Club World Cup is going on, but I haven’t watched a single game. Barça isn’t playing, so why watch it?”
Her words quickly went viral and sparked debate among fans and analysts. While the new Club World Cup format continues to grow in visibility, Bonmatí’s comments highlighted how the tournament still lacks appeal for some top players—especially when their own clubs aren't participating.
Spain Focused on the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro
With the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro approaching, Spain is fully focused on preparation. Under head coach Montse Tomé, the squad—which includes captains like Alexia Putellas, Olga Carmona, Irene Paredes, Mariona Caldentey, and Aitana Bonmatí—is gearing up for a strong start against Portugal on July 3.
“We’re not overconfident, but we’re ready. We’ve faced similar challenges at club and national level,” said Bonmatí. Alexia Putellas added: “For the first time, we feel we can fully focus on football. We have better travel, training, nutrition, and rest conditions.”
Olympics Criticism and Ballon d’Or Reflections
Bonmatí also criticized the conditions of the Olympic Games, calling it the “worst tournament” she’s played in due to scheduling and lack of proper rest. Despite winning two Ballon d’Ors, she reiterated that personal awards mean less than team performance: “Individual awards are a result of good collective work. Everyone’s thinking about helping the team first.”
The Spanish National Team will face Japan in a friendly match on June 27 at Butarque Stadium in Leganés, before heading to Switzerland for the Euros. As for Bonmatí, her message is clear: if Barcelona isn’t on the pitch, she’s not watching.
