Women's Champions League: Man Utd enjoy dream debut as Madrid and Atletico score six
Manchester United made a winning start to their first Women's Champions League campaign, while Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid ran riot.
Manchester United made a dream start to life in the Women's Champions League as they sealed a 1-0 win over Valerenga in their first ever game in the competition.
Maya Le Tissier's first-half penalty proved to be decisive at Progress with Unity Stadium, with the Red Devils the only Women's Super League side to win in Europe this week.
Marc Skinner's team came close to making the dream start inside the first minute on Wednesday, but Elisabeth Terland's glanced header narrowly evaded the far-left post.
United continued to turn the screw in the opening exchanges as Hinata Miyazawa tested Tove Enblom from distance, before Olaug Tvedten forced a smart stop at the other end.
Visiting goalkeeper Enblom was then on hand to repel Melvine Malard's close-range attempt, with Terland's follow-up then cleared off the line by a Valerenga defender.
But the Red Devils made the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Arna Eiriksdottir handled the ball inside the area, with Le Tissier stepping up to coolly dispatch the spot-kick.
Jessica Park then came close to doubling United's lead just 25 seconds after the restart, but the midfielder saw her shot brilliantly saved by Enblom at her near post.
From there, United only managed one further shot on target courtesy of Julia Zigiotti Olme, but Phallon Tullis-Joyce remained untroubled as the hosts saw out the triumph.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid put on an impressive showing as they thumped Roma 6-2 at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, with Linda Caicedo helping herself to a hat-trick of assists.
Alba Redondo's early opener was quickly cancelled out by Evelyne Viens before Madrid captain Caroline Weir restored Los Blancos' lead in the 22nd minute.
However, Emilie Haavi drew Roma level 10 minutes before the break, only for Redondo to bag her brace in the 42nd minute, with Madrid continuing their dominance from there.
Two goals in six second-half minutes from Maelle Lakrar and Weir put the result beyond doubt, with Eva Navarro concluding the rout 17 minutes from time.
Not to be outdone by their city rivals, Atletico Madrid marked their return to Europe's elite competition with a thrashing of their own, downing St. Polten 6-0 at NV ARENA.
The result was put beyond doubt in the first half, with goals from Gio Garbelini, Andrea Medina, Luany and Vilde Boe Risa putting the Spaniard's four up at the break.
Atletico had to wait until the 88th minute to get their fifth through Fiamma Benitez's penalty, with the forward notching her brace in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
Wolfsburg also started their European campaign in emphatic style, with the two-time champions cruising past Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 at AOK Stadion.
An early Jackie Groenen own-goal sent them on their way, with further strikes from Ella Peddemors, Alexandra Popp and Janina Minge getting them up and running.
Data Debrief: United off the mark as Spanish teams shine
United are one of two sides, along with Chelsea, in the WSL yet to lose this season, and they carried their impressive league form onto the European stage here to clinch a landmark victory on their Champions League debut.
And they were worthy of their triumph, with Skinner's team registering an expected goals (xG) total of 1.85 from their 16 attempts, while also limiting Valerenga to three shots at an xG value of 0.28, proving their quality at both ends of the pitch.
But the story of matchday one belongs to the three teams from Liga F, with Barcelona, Atletico and Madrid all occupying the top three places in the early league phase standings.
Indeed, the Spanish sides scored 19 goals between them in their opening games of the competition, just one shy of the entire total managed by the other 15 teams.
