Viktor Gyökeres and His Historic, Unstoppable Run With Sweden
The Arsenal striker was decisive once again for his country, setting a new Nations League mark while continuing to climb Sweden’s all-time scoring list.
Viktor Gyökeres keeps finding the net whenever he pulls on the shirt of Sweden. The striker scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over Romania in Bucharest and was once again decisive for Graham Potter’s side.
The Arsenal forward struck in the 13th minute, reacting quickest after a Sebastian Nanasi effort hit the post. Gyökeres pounced on the rebound and scored the goal that ultimately secured all three points for Sweden.
But the strike meant much more than just a victory. Gyökeres scored in his seventh consecutive Nations League match, a run that leaves him alone with a new competition record.
A Record No One Had Reached Before
Before Gyökeres’ run, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Benjamin Sesko had been among the competition’s benchmarks for consecutive scoring appearances. The Sweden striker not only surpassed them, but extended the mark to seven straight matches with a goal.
The goal also took him to 25 for the Swedish national team, moving him ahead of Marcus Berg on the country’s all-time scoring list.
His reaction, however, was far from over the top. “It feels good. It feels like you get good chances and then you score,” he told Viaplay, as quoted by Fotbolldirekt.
Gyökeres Wants More Despite His Incredible Form
Even after deciding the match once again, the striker was not completely satisfied with Sweden’s overall performance. Gyökeres felt his team had chances to put the game away much earlier.
“We could probably have done more in the first half and killed the game. We let them play and didn’t get up in the press well enough in the second half, so we made it difficult for ourselves,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of keeping a clean sheet. “It’s important for the team to have this type of match where things may not go exactly as we want. We manage to keep a clean sheet, it’s been a while so that’s very positive,” he added.
For the striker, finding a way to win even when the team is not in full control can also be an important part of the group’s development.
Sweden Heads Into November on Top
The victory gave Sweden a two-point lead over Bosnia at the top of the group and put them in a strong position heading into their next fixtures in November.
Gyökeres also stressed the importance of taking all three points given the situation in the group before kickoff.
“We knew the situation before this match so it was important for us to take three points and come back in November with a good position in the group. So it feels very positive,” he told Sportbladet.
Sweden got exactly what it needed in Bucharest. And while the team continues its push to finish top of the group, Gyökeres keeps turning almost every Nations League appearance into another date with the scoresheet.
