Turkiye name Yalcin as Montella's successor

  • Turkiye will be led by Sergen Yalcin in their final two Nations League matches in November after he succeeded Vincenzo Montella.

Turkiye have appointed Sergen Yalcin as Vincenzo Montella's successor.

Montella was sacked following a disappointing few months, in which Turkiye were knocked out in the group stage of the World Cup and made a dismal start to their Nations League campaign.

Turkiye lost all four of their Nations League matches, going down to France, Italy (twice) and Belgium.

Montella won 21 of his 40 matches in charge of Turkiye (52.5%), suffering 14 defeats.

And former Besiktas coach Yalcin will now take over, ahead of their final two Nations League games against Belgium and France in November.

The Turkish Football Association (TFF) confirmed his appointment on Tuesday in a statement, while Yalcin spoke of his pride after taking over the national team role.

"This duty is a very important one," Yalcin said during a programme on Kafa Sports, as quoted by Turkiye Today.

"The crescent and star are above everything. It is a position every coach wants to reach. Being the people's coach is a wonderful feeling.

"It is a source of pride and happiness for me, too. Hopefully, with everyone's support, a successful journey awaits us with the national team."

Yalcin has spent his managerial career working in the Turkish Super Lig, most recently leaving his second spell at Besiktas in May.

He has won 121 of his 276 games in all competitions as a manager (D67 L88), with an average win percentage of 43.8%.
