Spain Complete Comeback Against England to Extend Historic Unbeaten Run

Spain have written another historic chapter in international football. La Roja defeated England 3-2 at Wembley in UEFA Nations League, completing a comeback and extending their unbeaten streak to 39 consecutive matches, a record-breaking run for a national team.

SPAIN EXTEND THEIR UNBEATEN RUN TO 39 MATCHES

The victory over England allowed Spain to keep alive a streak that has now become part of the history of international football. The team managed by Luis de la Fuente reached 39 consecutive matches without a defeat, surpassing the previous mark of 37 games set by Italy between 2018 and 2021.

Spain's current unbeaten run began to take shape after their 1-0 friendly defeat to Colombia on March 22, 2024, in London. That match, however, was played at the London Stadium, rather than Wembley.

Since then, Spain have remained unbeaten, adding another victory to their record in League A of the UEFA Nations League.

BAENA AND OYARZABAL KEEP SPAIN'S STREAK ALIVE

The comeback against England reached a dramatic turning point. For 10 minutes, Spain found themselves behind on the scoreboard, putting their historic unbeaten streak under serious threat.

However, Álex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to turn the match around and keep the remarkable run alive. The 3-2 victory also gave Spain three points to open their Nations League group-stage campaign.

The match extended another remarkable individual record. Fabián Ruiz, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, reached 51 consecutive appearances for Spain without a defeat, covering every match he has played for the national team since making his international debut in June 2019.

The absolute world record also belongs to a Spaniard. Carlos Marchena went 57 consecutive matches unbeaten with Spain, although his streak is officially counted from his seventh appearance for the national team.

SPAIN CLAIM THIRD WIN AT WEMBLEY

The victory over England also gave Spain their third-ever win at Wembley.

Their first came in 1981, when Spain defeated England 2-1 in a friendly thanks to goals from Satrústegui and Zamora.

The second arrived in 2018, coincidentally during the UEFA Nations League group stage. Spain once again won 2-1, with Saúl Ñíguez and Rodrigo finding the net under manager Luis Enrique.

With their latest victory, the head-to-head record between the two national teams has become even closer. Spain have 12 wins in 29 meetings, while England have won 13 times, with the remaining four matches ending in draws.

The comeback at Wembley Stadium therefore delivered more than three points for Spain. It also extended a historic unbeaten streak to 39 matches, further cementing La Roja's place in the record books of international football.
