Pedro Porro Suffers Injury and Withdraws From Spain Squad for Nations League
Bad news for Pedro Porro just as he was beginning to put his physical problems behind him.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed his withdrawal just hours after the match, meaning Luis de la Fuente has lost one of the 26 players he selected in his first squad since winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For now, the head coach has not called up a replacement, reducing the squad to 25 players.
Porro Suffers Another Injury on His Tottenham Return
The timing of the injury makes the situation even more concerning.
Porro returned to the Tottenham starting lineup this Saturday after missing the team's previous two matches with a minor muscle problem.
Roberto De Zerbi had confirmed during the week that the Spaniard had recovered and was available to face Aston Villa, but his return lasted less than 20 minutes.
The full-back began experiencing discomfort during the opening stages of the match and was forced to leave the pitch. Archie Gray replaced him.
It is another setback for Porro, who was looking to regain continuity after physical problems had already kept him out against Everton in the Premier League and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
He will now undergo medical tests to determine the exact extent of the injury and how long he could be sidelined.
Luis de la Fuente Loses Another Player for the Nations League
The injury also changes Luis de la Fuente’s plans just one day after announcing his squad.
Porro was part of the group selected for Spain’s first four matches of the new UEFA Nations League campaign, beginning with a demanding trip to face England at Wembley Stadium on September 26.
The world champions will then host Croatia in Seville and Czechia in Oviedo before closing the international window with another match against Croatia, this time in Split.
His absence also reduces De la Fuente’s natural options at right-back. Marcos Llorente, who was part of the World Cup squad, recently announced his retirement from international football, while Eric García and Marc Pubill are among the defensive options in the current squad.
Spain’s training camp will begin next Tuesday in Las Rozas and, for now, 25 players are expected to report for duty with the world champions.
For Porro, however, another race against time begins.
He had regained his place with Tottenham and was ready to return with Spain. Less than 20 minutes later, another injury brought his comeback to a sudden halt.
