“The match demanded this change,” Jesus explained. “There were 25 minutes left and I wanted to bring on a quick player in the first defensive line, capable of pressing the two central defenders.”

The coach was also straightforward about Ronaldo’s physical condition late in the game. “Cris couldn’t do it anymore,” he admitted, before adding that he did not believe the forward had much more to offer offensively at that point.

The explanation framed the substitution as both a tactical and physical decision. Portugal were defending a one-goal lead, and Jesus wanted fresher legs to disrupt Wales higher up the pitch.
