Denmark 2-0 Wales: Isaksen stars to get Riemer's side off the mark

Denmark earned their first win of the Nations League after cruising to a 2-0 victory over Wales at Parken.

A Ben Davies own goal broke the deadlock before Gustav Isaksen added some insurance, as Denmark moved onto three points in Group A4, leaving Wales bottom with none.

Isaksen and Patrick Dorgu gave Wales a couple of early warnings, flashing efforts just wide of the left post before the former thought he had broken the deadlock 24 minutes in.

A pacy counter-attack saw Rasmus Hojlund lift a delicate cross between the defenders and Isaksen superbly volleyed past a helpless Danny Ward, but it was chalked off following a VAR review for an offside in the build-up.

From a quick throw-in, Hojlund then teed up Mikkel Damsgaard on the edge of the D, but his fizzing drive struck the foot of the left post.

Connor Roberts saw an instinctive flick tipped over by Filip Jorgensen in Wales' best chance of the first half, while Neco Williams' deflected drive flew into the goalkeeper's gloves just after the break.

Damsgaard's whipped right-sided free-kick caused chaos in the 53rd minute, and in trying to block Hojlund from getting to the ball, Davies deflected it into the back of his own net.

It was another Damsgaard free-kick that led to the second goal, too. Joachim Andersen's header was cleared off the line, but Isaksen put his laces through the rebound to send a deflected volley over Ward in the 66th minute – this one survived the VAR check.

Two late goals were both ruled out, with Hojlund drifting offside before turning past Ward with four minutes of the 90 remaining, while Williams' finish did not count after the referee blew his whistle early for a foul by Ethan Ampadu in the build-up.

Isaksen piles more misery on Wales

Craig Bellamy was proud of what he saw from his side against Portugal on Friday, but Wales fell just short again in Copenhagen after Denmark turned on the style.

While Isaksen will be pleased to finish with his name on the scoresheet, he could easily have had a double – the offside against Hojlund denied him a spectacular first goal.

Since his senior Denmark debut in March 2024, Isaksen is the joint-top scorer for the nation (seven, level with Hojlund), with six of his goals coming at Parken.

Davies, meanwhile, left with an unwanted mark against his name - in his 102nd appearance for his country, he scored his first own goal.

The lack of goals at the other end may prove to be a worry for Wales, who have failed to score in the first half of any of their six games in 2026 in all competitions, attempting 30 shots without success.

They had 10 attempts in total on Sunday, worth 0.65 expected goals (xG), while Denmark had double the number of shots, racking up 1.31 xG from those.
