Cristiano Ronaldo Gets FPF Backing for Portugal Return
Pedro Proença made it clear that the captain remains a key part of the national team despite his suspension and major fallout with Jorge Jesus.
The controversy has not changed the Portuguese Football Federation’s position. FPF president Pedro Proença publicly backed Cristiano Ronaldo and made it clear that, despite his provisional suspension and dispute with Jorge Jesus, he remains a key part of the national team.
“We are in the home of the greatest asset Portuguese football has ever produced: Cristiano Ronaldo, our captain,” Proença said at an FPF event in Funchal, Ronaldo’s birthplace. “Our captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of our key pieces.”
The comments come after the 41-year-old left the Portugal camp during the latest international break following a major disagreement with the coach over his lack of playing time. The FPF provisionally suspended Ronaldo, although no final punishment has yet been announced.
The Fallout With Jorge Jesus Still Has to Be Resolved
Ronaldo’s relationship with Jorge Jesus is now facing its biggest test after the pair reunited at international level. They had worked together at Al-Nassr last season, where they won the Saudi Pro League title before crossing paths again with Portugal.
The dispute erupted during the latest national-team camp. Ronaldo believed the coach had failed to honor what had been agreed regarding his playing time and decided to leave the squad, prompting the federation to open disciplinary proceedings.
Proença, however, believes the situation can still be resolved. His public backing makes one thing clear: the door remains open for the captain to return.

Cristiano Ronaldo Will Accept the Punishment but Is Not Done With Portugal
Ronaldo has already acknowledged that he will have to face the consequences of leaving camp. In his public statement, the forward said he would accept whatever punishment the federation decides to impose after reviewing the incident.
That does not mean he is ready to end his international career. Ronaldo insisted that his commitment to Portugal remains unchanged and that he still wants to represent his country whenever possible.
The next step now lies with the FPF and Jorge Jesus. The disciplinary process must first be resolved, and then the question becomes whether coach and captain can rebuild a relationship that was badly damaged during the latest camp.
November Could Define the Captain’s Future
Jorge Jesus’ next squad announcement should provide the first major answer. If Ronaldo is included again, it would be the clearest sign yet that the dispute is beginning to heal. If he is left out, questions surrounding his international future will only grow.
For now, the federation president’s position is unmistakable: Cristiano Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain and an important part of the national-team project.
