Amorim: We could become the worst Premier League team to win a European trophy
Manchester United hold a 3-0 lead over Athletic Bilbao ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said that his team could be the worst Premier League side ever to win a European trophy if they lift the Europa League.
United are currently 15th in the Premier League, but hold a 3-0 lead over Athletic Bilbao in their Europa League semi-final with the second leg to come at Old Trafford.
"For me, in that moment and you look at Premier League, we are the worst team since I arrived in terms of results. That is my idea. In the end of the season, we can be the worst team in Premier League history with a European title," he told a press conference.
"So we will not change anything. We know that this season was disappointing.
"Nothing is going to change, in that moment, I have to think a bit more but I felt that. I still feel that this season was the worst in the last 50 years."
While United have staved off any outside threat of relegation, this season is currently on course to be their first ever Premier League finish outside the top eight.
Should they finish in 15th or lower, meanwhile, it will mark Manchester United's worst finish since they were relegated from the top flight in the 1973-74 season.
They are on a six-match winless streak in the Premier League, but will qualify for the Champions League if they can win the Europa League.
"We know we are not doing a great job in the Premier League. We follow the rules and tomorrow we will face the game like it is 0-0," said Alejandro Garnacho, who was sat alongside Amorim.
"If we win the Europa League, we will be in the Champions League and we can face the next season with a better mentality."
