Amorim sees Manchester United as the worst Premier League team ever to fight for a European title
Rúben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, said that if his team ends up winning this season’s UEFA Europa League, they might go down as the worst Premier League team in history to lift a European trophy. The Portuguese coach made the comments during a press conference, when asked whether he still stood by what he said a few weeks ago—calling this United side the worst ever.
“You have to understand those words in context, because things change. Looking at it from a Premier League point of view, we’re still the worst team since I took over. By the end of the season, we might be the worst Premier side ever to win a European title. It’s been a really disappointing season for everyone, and that’s not going to change,” said Amorim.
Signs of progress and full focus on Athletic Club
Despite the harsh self-assessment, the manager did acknowledge the team has improved. “We’re getting better, we’re more confident with the ball, and we’re ready for the challenge this Thursday against Athletic Club de Bilbao,” said the Portuguese coach.
The Spanish side visits Old Trafford trailing 3–0 from the first leg and dealing with key absences, including brothers Iñaki and Nico Williams, as well as Oihan Sancet, all of whom are crucial in Ernesto Valverde’s system.
Amorim made it clear they won’t be taking anything for granted. “It doesn’t matter who’s missing. That’s not our concern. We have to go out there and play our game. For us, this is a final, and we have to treat it like one—by winning,” he said.
