All Goals from Athletic vs Manchester United in Europa League Semifinals
This Thursday, San Mamés will host a crucial clash between Athletic Club and Manchester United in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals. Both sides arrive with contrasting realities but share the same goal: move one step closer to the final and secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
All or Nothing at San Mamés: Athletic and Manchester United Play for Their Season
The team led by Rúben Amorim is enduring a disappointing campaign in the Premier League, currently sitting 14th in the table. The Portuguese coach admitted in a press conference that although "nothing can save" the season, winning the Europa League could "change a lot of things in the club and in the summer." Amorim emphasized the need for rebuilding through hard work and consistency, regardless of trophies.
Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who starts alongside Casemiro in midfield, stressed the importance of this competition as a path back to Europe’s elite. “The United legacy is built on trophies,” he said, making it clear that the squad is fully focused on the tie against the Basque side.
Ugarte also pointed out the difference in performance between Europe and domestic competition: “We feel better physically in Europe. In the Premier League we’ve created chances but failed to score. Here, we’re more focused.”
Valverde Goes on the Attack at Home
On the other side, Ernesto Valverde won’t have Oihan Sancet available due to injury and has chosen a more offensive option to replace him: Álex Berenguer. The coach opts for an aggressive approach, relying on the pace and creativity of the Williams brothers, Iñaki and Nico, who have been standout performers this season.
Valverde is well aware of United’s threat, but trusts that Athletic’s intensity and the home crowd’s energy at La Catedral can be decisive, especially during the opening 30 minutes.
Amorim praised the Basque side, calling them “one of the most intense teams in Spain” and described Nico Williams as “a special player” capable of breaking through any defense.
For both clubs, this tie represents more than a step toward a trophy—it’s a chance to save the season, restore pride, and return to the European spotlight.
