(VIDEO) Heung-Min Son’s tears after achieving what Harry Kane never did with Tottenham
Heung-Min Son has become not just a legend but the true face of Tottenham Hotspur, sticking with the club through thick and thin. Now, after winning the UEFA Europa League, he’s reached the biggest achievement in the Spurs’ recent history — even after his teammate Harry Kane left. The South Korean was seen with tears in his eyes celebrating this historic moment.
Although he started on the bench and asked to be in the starting lineup, Son came on as a sub to help hold the lead, even though he wasn’t fully fit. Before the match, he said: “I’ve been at Tottenham for 10 years and I just want to win a trophy.” Finally, after a long wait and a tough season, where Spurs are struggling near the bottom seven in the Premier League, Son made history and hit a goal he’d chased for over nine years.
How the final went down and the winning goal
The UEFA Europa League final, held at San Mamés, was intense but not exactly dazzling. A goal credited to Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham Hotspur the win over Manchester United, earning the London club its fourth continental trophy after the 1963 Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Cups of 1972 and 1984.
The goal came three minutes before halftime, after a cross from the right wing by Pape Sarr that Johnson finished in the box. The ball hit Luke Shaw, who was initially credited with the goal, and ended up in the net — the only goal of the match. The clearest chance for Manchester United came in the 68th minute, when Micky van de Ven, with an acrobatic clearance, stopped a header from Rasmus Højlund right on the goal line.
The end of a long wait for Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur fans can finally celebrate after more than 16 years without a trophy. The last time was on February 24, 2008, when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Carling Cup (now called the EFL Cup) final at Wembley. That team, coached by Juande Ramos, had heroes like Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane, and Jonathan Woodgate, who scored the winning goal. Now, the Spurs haven’t just won a big title — they’ve also secured a spot in the next UEFA Champions League.
