Jablonec 1-0 Rangers (1-1 agg, 4-3 pens): McInnes' side dumped out of Conference League

Rangers were condemned to a penalty shoot-out defeat against Jablonec in their Conference League play-off, following a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

Jablonec sent the tie to extra time after Vakhtang Tchanturishvili cancelled out Rangers' first-leg lead, and the Czech side emerged victorious on penalties, winning 4-3 to book their place in the league phase of the competition.

Jablonec started on the front foot and saw a brilliant chance fall the way of Lamin Jawo, though he failed to hit the target while one-v-one with Ivor Pandur, while Tochi Chukwuani sent a tame header Jan Hanus' way at the other end.

Jawo and Matej Polidar forced saves from the Rangers goalkeeper before the break, prompting Derek McInnes to introduce Findlay Curtis, Lawrence Shankland and Connor Barron for the second half.

Rangers were still on the back foot as they failed to add to their first-leg advantage, which was eventually wiped out in the 73rd minute as Tchanturishvili brilliantly dribbled past James Penrice before firing into the bottom-right corner.

Jablonec could not avoid extra time, though they went closest to winning the tie in the additional 30 minutes when Jan Chramosta dragged narrowly wide.

But they would ultimately advance via spot-kicks.

Shankland started the shoot-out with a confident strike into the bottom-right corner before Antonin Rusek powered an effort into the roof of the net, though consecutive misses from Curtis and Penrice allowed Chramosta to clinch victory for the hosts.

Pressure mounts significantly on McInnes

Rangers would have certainly hoped to have featured in the Europa League this season before losing in qualifying to Jagiellonia Bialystok, but missing out on European football entirely will cause an uproar among their fans.

And the Scottish outfit were second-best for much of the second leg, accumulating just 0.54 expected goals (xG) from nine attempts, one of which was on target, while Jablonec produced 1.13 xG from 16 shots.

Shankland failed to even hit the target with any of his three shots (team-high) after his introduction at half-time, while Penrice's poor defending for the goal looked even more costly following his miss in the shoot-out.

McInnes will now have plenty of questions to answer, with Rangers still yet to win in the Scottish Premiership this season, drawing with Dundee United before losing to Hibernian last time out.
