Enzo Fernández: From La Albiceleste to European Glory with Chelsea
After conquering the world with Argentina, Enzo Fernández has now claimed his first major title in European football. The 24-year-old midfielder, a key figure in Chelsea’s midfield, played a starring role in the emphatic 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Conference League final, held in Wrocław, Poland.
The young talent from San Martín, Buenos Aires, had already made history with La Albiceleste, winning the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the recent Copa América 2024. But now, he’s also making his mark at club level in Europe, where he’s beginning to build a promising career.
A header that changed everything
The match didn’t start well for the English side, who went into halftime trailing. However, Enzo Fernández stepped up in the second half to turn things around. In the 65th minute, the Argentine rose to meet a cross from Cole Palmer and headed the ball into the net, leveling the score and sparking a dominant comeback by Chelsea, who ultimately thrashed the Spanish side.
That goal was yet another sign of the development of the former River Plate and Benfica player, who has recorded 7 goals and 13 assists in 42 games for the Blues this season.
From Qatar to London: the breakthrough
Since joining the so-called "Scaloneta" for the 2022 World Cup, Enzo Fernández’s rise has been meteoric. After being named the tournament’s Best Young Player, he secured a record-breaking €130 million move to Chelsea, which at the time made him the most expensive signing in Premier League history.

Just a year and a half later, he’s already lifted his first continental trophy with the London club, establishing himself as an undisputed starter in the English side’s system.
A bright future ahead
Beyond his success at Chelsea, Fernández remains a crucial piece in Argentina’s qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup. In their most recent qualifier, he scored in a historic 4-1 win over Brazil.
At just 24, Enzo Fernández boasts an enviable résumé: titles with River Plate, Defensa y Justicia, Benfica, and now Chelsea, along with two major trophies with the Argentine national team.
Nicknamed ‘Gardelito’ for his resemblance to tango icon Carlos Gardel, he’s no longer just a promising talent. Today, he’s a confirmed star in world football.
