Chelsea Is Chasing a Historic Treble in Europe that Only Mourinho Has Achieved
Chelsea is in a position to become the first team to win all three currently existing European club competitions
In the 2021/2022 season, José Mourinho not only made history by leading Roma to victory in the first edition of the Conference League. He also became the first coach to win all three existing European titles in the football world. However, this record is now at risk of being taken by a Chelsea team he managed in two separate stints… and with which he never won any of these three titles.

Chelsea must overcome Betis
With a multimillion-dollar investment since Todd Boehly succeeded Roman Abramovich as president, Chelsea debuted in the Conference League as the top favorite to claim the title at the end of the season… despite not registering their big stars during the first phase. A few months later, it has been proven that they didn’t need them to reach the final against Betis, which will take place on May 28th in Poland.
They did it after overcoming humble Djurgarden in the semifinals, presenting a lineup full of substitutes and even three academy players like Josh Acheampong, Reggie Walsh, and Tyrique George. “We have worked hard every day to reach the final, and now we’re here. The next step is to try to win this competition. We have 20 days to prepare for the final,” said Enzo Maresca after the match.
“It’s a good starting point”
Logically, winning the Conference League represents a smaller achievement for a team that less than five years ago won its second Champions League by defeating Manchester City. However, Maresca highlighted the importance of winning another title for Chelsea, as their last success was the Club World Cup in 2022: “It’s a good starting point to build a winning mentality and win trophies.”
The truth is that the priority is to secure qualification for the next edition of the Champions League after two years of absence. However, Chelsea is on the verge of achieving a historic feat, as no club has won the Champions League (2012 and 2021), the Europa League (2013 and 2019), and the Conference League (2025). To do so, Maresca will need to overcome Betis, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, his “professional father,” in the final.
