Will Achraf Hakimi Recover in Time to Play the AFCON with Morocco?
Paris Saint-Germain can breathe a sigh of relief after confirming that Achraf Hakimi will not need surgery, although his injury raises doubts about his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Morocco.
Serious Injury, but No Surgery Required
The Moroccan full-back underwent medical tests in Paris after being stretchered off during the match against Bayern Munich, following a harsh tackle from Colombian Luis Díaz — who was later sent off after VAR intervention. The results confirmed a syndesmosis tear with a slight deltoid involvement in his left ankle. While the diagnosis ruled out a fracture or damage requiring surgery, the estimated recovery time is eight weeks, seriously jeopardizing his chances of playing in the continental tournament starting December 21.
“Luckily, he won’t need surgery, but he’ll be out for around two months,” club sources reported. Coach Luis Enrique regrets losing one of his most consistent players at a crucial stage of the season, as PSG aim to stay strong in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League.
Morocco on Edge Awaiting Their Captain’s Recovery
The news has caused concern within the Moroccan national team, since Hakimi is a key figure for Walid Regragui, both for his leadership and attacking contribution from the right flank. His recovery will be closely monitored by Morocco’s medical staff, who remain hopeful he can make it, though time is not on his side.
From Germany, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany sent a message of support to the player: “I hope he recovers soon. It’s terrible — we went through the same thing last year with Musiala. I don’t think Díaz meant to hurt him; these things happen in high-intensity matches.”
Meanwhile, PSG will have to reorganize their defense, likely with Nordi Mukiele or Marquinhos filling in at right-back. The main goal now is to speed up Hakimi’s recovery without jeopardizing his fitness, hoping he can return in time to represent his country at AFCON 2024.
The Moroccan star faces a huge challenge: beating the clock to wear red and green again and lead his nation in Africa’s most prestigious tournament.
