When does the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League start?

  • Although qualifying began in July, the Champions League’s main stage gets underway from September 8 to 10, when Matchday 1 of the league phase takes place.

The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League is officially underway, but its main stage has not started yet. Qualifying began on July 7 and has now reached the play-offs, which will determine the final places in the league phase. For Europe’s biggest clubs and the part of the tournament that attracts the most attention, however, the key date comes in September: Matchday 1 of the league phase will be played from Tuesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 10, 2026.

UEFA has confirmed that 29 teams qualify directly for the league phase, with the final seven spots decided through qualifying. So while the competition technically started in July, September will bring together the complete 36-team field for the first major stage of the tournament.

When is Champions League Matchday 1?

The opening league-phase matchday will be played across three days, from September 8 to 10. The remaining matchdays will take place primarily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Before the action begins, the league-phase draw will be held on Thursday, August 27, when each club’s eight opponents will be determined.

The format remains the same as in the previous two seasons. All 36 teams are placed in a single league table, with each club playing eight matches against eight different opponents: four at home and four away. The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while those finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Clubs finishing from 25th to 36th are eliminated.

That means September is the moment when the competition changes significantly. The qualifying field disappears, all 36 league-phase participants are confirmed and the clubs that earned direct entry finally begin their European campaign.

The full league-phase schedule

After the September opener, Matchday 2 will be played on October 13 and 14. Matchday 3 follows on October 20 and 21, with Matchday 4 on November 3 and 4, Matchday 5 on November 24 and 25, and Matchday 6 on December 8 and 9.

The competition resumes in 2027 with Matchday 7 on January 19 and 20. The eighth and final league-phase matchday will be played on Wednesday, January 27.

When does the 2026-27 Champions League end?

The knockout phase begins in February 2027 and leads to the final on Saturday, June 5. The decisive match will be staged at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid, home of Atlético de Madrid.

So although the 2026-27 Champions League officially started with qualifying in July, the tournament’s main event begins in September. From September 8 to 10, the 36 league-phase teams will start the road to the final in Madrid.
