Thierry Henry’s Dig at Barcelona After PSG’s Champions League Victory
Thierry Henry sent a clear message after PSG’s win in Barcelona: the key lies in squad depth. Was it a dig at Barça?
PSG strikes in Montjuïc
PSG secured a vital victory at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, defeating Barcelona 2-1 in a match decided in the closing minutes. The hero was Gonçalo Ramos, who came off the bench to seal the win after a superb assist from Achraf Hakimi in the 90th minute. It was a statement win for Luis Enrique’s side, who faced the clash with key absences such as Dembélé, Doué, and Kvaratskhelia, but relied on youngsters like Senny Mayulu and Ibrahim Mbaye, both starters.
Thierry Henry’s message
Speaking on CBS, former Barça star Thierry Henry was blunt in his analysis:
"If you want to win, go far and do well in the competition, you need players who can give everything when they come on."
The Frenchman underlined the importance of the bench in long tournaments like the Champions League and used PSG as an example, with Ramos’ decisive impact and Mayulu’s goal: "During the season, you need the bench to get you out of trouble. That’s why PSG signed Gonçalo Ramos. A substitute has to change games. That’s also why I see Arsenal as contenders: a strong bench can decide titles."
A contrast with Barça
While PSG showed squad depth, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona struggled in attack. Without Raphinha or Fermín, the coach made minimal attacking changes, only bringing on Robert Lewandowski, which was not enough to avoid defeat.
Gonçalo Ramos makes history
Beyond sealing the win, Ramos’ goal made him PSG’s all-time top scorer coming off the bench, with 17 goals, surpassing none other than Kylian Mbappé. A record that cements his reputation as a lethal weapon for the Parisian side.
