The Only Comeback from 0-2 in the Champions Was Led by Marcus Rashford
An Almost Impossible Feat for Barcelona
Barcelona faces the responsibility of overturning a 0-2 deficit at the Metropolitano against Atlético de Madrid. It is an extremely difficult task: it has only happened once in the history of the Champions League. Adding to that, the Catalans have never managed to eliminate Atlético de Madrid in this competition, making the challenge even greater.
The Precedent Led by Marcus Rashford
The only 0-2 comeback occurred in the 2018/19 season, during the Round of 16, when Manchester United eliminated PSG with a memorable performance at the Parc des Princes.
The first leg ended 0-2 in favor of the Parisian side at Old Trafford, with goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappé. In the return leg in France, the score was 1-3: a double from Romelu Lukaku, a goal from Juan Bernat for PSG, and, as the match was dying down, a decisive penalty. The responsibility fell on Marcus Rashford, who didn’t hesitate and scored in the 96th minute to send the “Red Devils” to the quarterfinals, where they were later eliminated by Barcelona.
Barcelona’s History of European Comebacks
This precedent gives hope to the Catalan side, which needs a miracle similar to the one achieved by the English team. Additionally, there is a symbolic element: Marcus Rashford, the same player who secured that comeback in Paris, now wears the Blaugrana colors.
Barcelona is no stranger to historic comebacks in Europe. In the 1999/2000 Champions League, they lost 3-1 in the first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and needed to win by two goals at Camp Nou. The return was complicated after a goal from Tore André Flo, but the team led by Louis van Gaal scored five goals, and in extra time and advanced to the semifinals.
The most memorable, without a doubt, was in the 2016/17 season, when in the Round of 16 they came back from 0-4 against PSG. At Camp Nou, they produced an epic 6-1 victory, sealed with the dramatic goal by Sergi Roberto that sent them to the quarterfinals.
A Different Challenge Away from Home
However, there is a key detail: both previous return matches were played at Camp Nou. This time, the challenge is different. Barcelona must achieve something they have never done before: overturn a tie of this magnitude away from home.
Now they have a special “charm.” Marcus Rashford has already played the exact result the Catalans need. The question is whether history is ready to repeat itself… or if Atlético de Madrid will assert themselves again on the European stage.
