The Historic Record That Antoine Griezmann Achieved With Atlético de Madrid
Atlético de Madrid experienced a magical night at the Metropolitano, where Antoine Griezmann cemented his legendary status by scoring his 200th goal in the red-and-white shirt. The French forward reached the milestone in a 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 2 of the Champions League, a feat that confirms his place as the club’s all-time leading scorer.
A mark that seals his eternal place in Atlético history
The goal came in the 45th minute, when Griezmann latched onto a pass from Julián Álvarez to beat the German goalkeeper and make it 3-0. Just seconds later, the stadium announcer confirmed the historic record, while the crowd erupted, chanting his name. From the bench, he was handed a special shirt with the inscription “Grizzi 200,” a gesture that sparked a thunderous ovation among the 59,401 spectators present, including the 4,000 traveling German fans.
This milestone caps a journey that began in 2014, when the Frenchman first joined the Madrid club. In December 2023, he equaled Luis Aragonés with 173 goals, and just a month later, in January 2024, he surpassed him with his 174th strike against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup in Riyadh. Since then, every game has been an opportunity to extend a record that once seemed untouchable.
“Very proud” of the achievement
At the end of the match, Griezmann expressed his joy and gratitude at reaching the 200-goal mark. “I’m very proud, it took a lot of effort, but with hard work and the support of my wife and kids we’ve achieved it. This number is special, now it’s about keeping on adding more,” he told Movistar.
The striker also highlighted the strong collective moment the team is enjoying: “The comeback against Rayo Vallecano gave us confidence, and playing at home makes us even stronger. We’re on a good wave and we need to keep this rhythm.”
Griezmann’s legacy in Atlético history
With 200 goals in 454 matches, Griezmann comfortably tops the all-time scoring charts for Atlético de Madrid, well ahead of legendary names such as Luis Aragonés (173), Adrián Escudero (169), and Fernando Torres (130). But his impact goes beyond the numbers: the Frenchman has become a symbol of Atlético’s effort and ambition over the last decade.
The red-and-white faithful know it, and that’s why they embrace him as one of their own. His record not only elevates his name but also embodies the hunger of a team determined to remain a force in Spain and in Europe.
