Relief for PSG: Achraf Hakimi Avoids Surgery, But... How Long Will He Be Out?
The Moroccan full-back for Paris Saint-Germain will miss at least two months of action following Luis Díaz’s tough tackle in the Champions League.
Good and bad news for PSG. The club confirmed that Achraf Hakimi has suffered a syndesmosis tear with mild deltoid ligament damage in his left ankle, but surgery will not be required. The defender was stretchered off during the match against Bayern Munich, which ended in a 1–2 defeat for the Parisians, after a hard challenge from Colombian winger Luis Díaz, who was sent off following a VAR review.
The Moroccan full-back was immediately taken to a clinic in Paris, where tests ruled out a more serious injury. However, his estimated recovery time is eight weeks, which practically rules him out of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to begin on December 21.
“Fortunately, he won’t need surgery, but he’ll be sidelined for a considerable amount of time,” sources close to the club reported. The PSG coaching staff, led by Luis Enrique, deeply regrets the loss of one of their most consistent defenders, especially at such a crucial stage of the season.
Concern in Morocco and Support from Bayern
The news also sparked concern within the Moroccan National Team, where Hakimi is not only a guaranteed starter but also captain and leader. His potential absence from the continental tournament would be a major blow for Walid Regragui’s side, which relies heavily on the full-back’s experience and energy.
Meanwhile, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany expressed sympathy for his rival and sent a message of support. “I hope he recovers soon. It’s terrible — we went through the same thing last year with Musiala. I don’t think Díaz meant any harm; it was just an unfortunate incident in a very intense match,” said the Belgian manager after the victory at the Parc des Princes.
With this injury, PSG loses pace and width down the right flank — a role that will now likely be filled by Mukiele or even Marquinhos, as the medical staff races against time to have Hakimi ready for the Champions League Round of 16.
The relief of avoiding surgery is mixed with uncertainty over a recovery that could take longer than expected. For now, the Moroccan full-back begins a new challenge: the battle to return to the pitch stronger than ever.
