Real Madrid Turned Down Van Dijk to Bet on Dean Huijsen
The Dutch defender wanted to wear white, but Xabi Alonso and the board chose to invest in the club’s future with a rising star
The Champions League clash between Liverpool and Real Madrid comes loaded with history, reunions, and a revelation that has shaken the transfer market: the Spanish giants reportedly turned down the chance to sign Virgil van Dijk, who had offered himself to the club before renewing with the Reds. According to AS, the Dutch center-back reached out to Madrid through his representatives, expressing his desire to join as a free agent. However, the club opted instead to trust Dean Huijsen, a young defender they view as a key part of their long-term project.
Under Xabi Alonso’s leadership, Real Madrid considered bringing in Van Dijk, but concerns about his age and injury history—particularly the severe ACL tear he suffered in 2020—outweighed his experience. The board chose to focus on youth and potential, staying true to their defensive rejuvenation policy, with Huijsen emerging as one of the team’s most promising talents.
Van Dijk Wanted to Join Real Madrid
The Liverpool captain had a renewal offer on the table from the English club, but his top priority was a move to Madrid. He even turned down proposals from other European sides and Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, who had offered him a massive contract. However, after Madrid declined to move forward, the Dutchman signed a two-year extension to remain at Anfield.
Since joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2018 for a then-record fee for a defender, Van Dijk has been one of the club’s cornerstones. He has played over 330 matches, winning the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup, as well as being named UEFA Player of the Year in 2019 and finishing runner-up to Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or.
The Two Clubs Ahead of Their Big Clash
While Van Dijk is looking to rediscover his best form in a Liverpool side struggling through a rough patch—with six losses in their last seven games—Real Madrid arrive at Anfield in top shape. Xabi Alonso’s men lead LaLiga by five points over Barcelona, having suffered just one defeat all season.
The signing of Huijsen, who joined from Bournemouth, has strengthened Madrid’s defense, which has conceded only ten goals so far in the campaign. In Madrid, there are no regrets—they chose the future, and so far, the decision looks like a masterstroke.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, will now have the perfect opportunity to show on the pitch what Real Madrid decided not to buy: his leadership and authority on Europe’s biggest stage.
