Premier League Failure in Champions League: No English Team Won the First Leg of the Round of 16
The league widely considered the strongest in the world endured a brutal night in Europe. The first legs of the Round of 16 left English clubs in a surprisingly fragile position.
A night that left England in serious trouble
The UEFA Champions League 2026 delivered an unexpected outcome for the Premier League, a competition often labeled the strongest domestic league in world football. With six English clubs competing in the Round of 16 first legs, the final balance was stunning: not a single victory.
The most painful blow came for Manchester City, who suffered a 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. The side managed by Pep Guardiola struggled to contain Madrid’s transitions and paid the price for defensive mistakes against a ruthless opponent.
Real Madrid, PSG and Atlético lead the European response
The defeat of Manchester City set the tone for what became a disastrous night for English clubs. Chelsea also endured a heavy setback, losing 5-2 to Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champions of the tournament, in a high-tempo match where defensive errors proved costly.
Neither Liverpool nor Tottenham managed to avoid defeat either. Liverpool fell 1-0 to Galatasaray in Istanbul, while Atlético Madrid delivered one of the most emphatic results of the round by beating Tottenham 5-2 at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Arsenal and Newcastle manage only draws
The only English clubs to avoid defeat were Arsenal and Newcastle, although neither side secured the kind of result that would significantly improve the Premier League’s overall outlook.
Arsenal rescued a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen, thanks to a penalty converted by Kai Havertz after a controversial challenge on Noni Madueke. Meanwhile, Newcastle also finished 1-1 against Barcelona at St James’ Park, with Lamine Yamal scoring from the penalty spot late in the match.
Europe takes control while the Premier searches for answers
While English teams try to explain the collective setback, several European clubs seized the opportunity to move closer to the Champions League quarterfinals.
Bayern Munich sent a strong message by comfortably defeating Atalanta, while Bodø/Glimt continued its remarkable run by beating Sporting CP 3-0, putting the Norwegian side in an excellent position to advance.
The final tally for the Premier League speaks for itself: four defeats and two draws in six matches. The second legs will now become a major test for English football, which must respond quickly to avoid a potential wave of eliminations from Europe’s most prestigious competition.
