Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho: From Copa Libertadores Champions to Champions League Final Rivals
This year's Champions League Final will have a strong Ecuadorian flavor.
Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho now share the same dream: lifting the famous European Cup. But before reaching the biggest stage in club football, they shared a journey that began years ago in Ecuador.
Both players were champions of the Copa Libertadores U-20. Coincidentally, they were born in Ecuador's Esmeraldas province and arrived at Independiente del Valle in 2016, where they progressed through the academy ranks together and became close friends.
A Journey That Started At Independiente del Valle
Hincapié and Pacho played together for Independiente del Valle's U-18 and U-20 teams.
In March 2020, they celebrated one of the biggest achievements of their youth careers, winning the Copa Libertadores U-20 after defeating River Plate in the final.
Their connection extended beyond the pitch. They developed together, grew through the same academy system, and took the first steps toward careers that would eventually place them among Ecuador's top footballers.

From Teammates In Ecuador To Stars In Europe
The two close friends both made their first-team debuts for Independiente del Valle in 2019.
After impressing in Ecuador, they earned moves to Europe, where they established themselves at the highest level and became key figures for the Ecuadorian national team.
Now, football has placed them on opposite sides in the most important club match in the world.
Hincapié Hopes To Follow Pacho's Path
Pacho has already celebrated Champions League success with PSG, and now Hincapié hopes to do the same with Arsenal.
"I've known him since we were very young. We trained a lot together at Independiente del Valle when we were kids. We dreamed about moments like this together. He has already been champion, and hopefully this time it will be my turn," the Arsenal defender said ahead of the match.
A Historic Champions League Final For Ecuador
For the first time in the history of Europe's premier club competition, two Ecuadorians will play in a Champions League Final.
But beyond the success they enjoy today, both players will always carry Independiente del Valle in their hearts — the club where their friendship began and where the foundations were laid for a remarkable journey that has now brought them to the biggest stage in European football.
